AI coding tools

AI coding tools split into editors and plugins. An editor replaces the environment you work in and can act across a whole repository. A plugin lives inside the editor you already use. The second is easier to adopt; the first can do more with the code around it.

What separates the tools here

Adoption cost is the first axis. A plugin installs into what a team already runs. An editor asks everybody to switch, which is a much larger request even when the editor is better.

The second axis is what the vendor commits to about your source. Privacy modes, retention terms and whether code is used for training are all published, all different between vendors, and all things a security review will ask about before a purchase order is signed.
